Happy Summer Vacation
Have a safe and wonderful summer! The students have worked very hard and need some time to rest and play, but I do encourage you to support & maintain the growth your child has made this year with small amounts of time set aside each day to read, practice addition and subtraction facts. Thank you for the support you have given to our class and for an amazing year!
Take care,
Ms. Treptow
Week of May 13th-17th
This week we finished up all our academic assessments. Please remind your child we still have five days left of school and to be on their best behavior. As first grade comes to end, it can cause some anxiety or sadness for your child. These are normal behaviors, and I have reassured them that I will see them next year on the playground! I’ve really enjoyed teaching your child this year. It has been a pleasure watching your child grow and learn. They will do fabulous in second grade.
Reading Group Books
I am still missing some reading group books from some students. Please help your child look for them at home and turn them in next week. I appreciate you taking the time to do this for me.
Reminders from the Health Office
A note from Ms. G…..If your child has medication in the health office, please stop by to pick it up Thursday or Friday. I will send inhalers home with students if they stop by to pick them up before dismissal time on Thursday, but all other medications need to be picked up by parents/guardians. It is best to pick up Epipens on the last day of school in case your children were to need it on that last day. Medications cannot be kept at school over summer break, so any medications that are not picked up, will be discarded.

This quarter has gone by so fast! In conjunction with our community helper theme, the students pretended to be engineers to create and built a bridge. The students got in small groups and devised a plan to build a bridge over “Sparky Lake”. Each student followed the STEM engineering design process. This process involved asking a question, brainstorming ideas, making a list and drawing a plan. After the plan was made the students created the bridge, and then tested the bridge to see if the Hot wheel car could cross it successfully. Many students succeed, but some had to make improvements. The students really enjoyed using the STEM process to create their bridge. These bridges will be displayed at summative. As a wrap-up on our unit about helping our community, we enjoyed a visit from Office Fletcher from the ASU Police Dept. He talked to our students about ways in which he serves our community. The students did a great job of asking him questions!

Kindness Week
The week of January 28th to January 31st is Kindness Week. We will be having a money war among all the grade levels. We are collecting money to donate to the “Kind Coins for Liberia”. Coins count for our class and dollar bills count against us (we still encourage students to send dollars to put in another grade level cluster’s bucket). We are trying to collect the most coins/dollars for our 1-2 cluster and win!
In addition, NJHS will be selling kindness grams on the playground before school. Each gram is .50 cents and all proceeds will go to the “Kind Coins for Liberia” fund.
We will be celebrating kindness week with a spirit week on:
January 28th-31st
Monday – Hat’s off to Kindness
- Wear your hat
Tuesday – Crazy for Kindness
- Crazy hair & socks
Wednesday – Team up to Clean up
- Wear your favorite team jersey
Thursday – Dollar dress Down
- Free dress for a dollar
Valentine Exchange
We will be doing a Valentine exchange on Thursday, Feb. 14th. Valentine bags will be decorated at school so you do not need to create a Valentine box at home. If your child wants to participate in the Valentine exchange, please have your child make one Valentine for each student in our class. Small items or candy may be attached to the Valentines. We are also in need of some heart/Valentine’s stickers and doilies to decorate the bags. Donations are greatly appreciated!
Spring Carnival
The first-grade students have selected the theme, “ASU” for their classroom basket that will be auctioned off at this year’s ASU Prep School Carnival. The carnival will be held on Friday, April 12th. The PTSO and teachers are working hard to help make this year’s carnival a success!
We need your help in collecting new items for the auction basket. If you are able to donate any new ASU item(s) that corresponds with the theme, please send in your donation with your student no later than March 29th. The PTSO will be sending out a sign-up genius for volunteers.
Thank you for supporting our school!
