Happy Friday!
We have had a busy week this week! Our class did a great job during testing week, making sure we were on task and quiet while the older grades completed their AZ Merit testing. We included some fun activities to lighten things up a bit! Ask them about their "pet" Peep! We spend the day morning this a morning writing about our adventures with our peep and creating some poetry to go along with it as well. The students seem to have a great time being responsible for their pet!
We also started our new Benchmark unit on Buyers and Sellers this week along with our new math unit on shapes. Keep practicing those math facts at home to prepare for 3rd grade!
We also started our research on our natural disasters. We will continue this into next week as well. The students seem very interested in their topics and are working hard pulling out key information on their chosen disaster. Thank you for helping at home with this!

Hello Amazing Families and Happy April!
This week we continued our Benchmark Unit on "How Wind and Water Change the Earth" Some of you have already started sending in research materials for our natural disaster project. Thank you! These items are due next Friday April 12th. Remember, your child will be reporting on a specific natural disaster event that occurred in the past for our summative on May 2nd.
In math, we started our unit on standard measurement using inches, feet, and yards. Yesterday, we folded our own paper airplanes and used tape measures to see how far they flew!
Our Spring Carnival is next Friday April 12th starting at 5pm. A flyer came home Thursday with more information. We hope to see you all there!
AZ Merit testing
Starting the week of April 15-19th AZ Merit testing will take place for grades 3-8. We will also have AZ Merit testing on Monday, April 8th. Although 1-2 will not be testing, it will affect our schedule times. We will not be having our special area classes (Art, P.E., Spanish, STEM & Learning Lab) that week. Happy Weekend!
I hope you are all enjoying your cloudy Saturday! We had a full 5 days of great learning this week! We finished our "Tales to Live By" Benchmark Unit this week. The workbooks were sent home yesterday with the optional extension activity calendar. We spent time this week planning our very own pourquoi tales which we will author this week. The students have been very creative with their topics and explanations of natural phenomenon. I am excited to see the finished products!
This week during math we focused on word problems and key words. How do we know whether to add and subtract? We also talked about the importance of showing our work and thinking about the situation being presented. Do our operations make sense? We also talked about addition as a tool to check our subtraction work and practiced this strategy.
Writing time was spent crafting our own opinion writing piece. Students were to write about their favorite hobby, and support their opinion with reasons and details. They also went back and edited their writing using the CUPS method.
Valentine Exchange
We will be doing a Valentine exchange on Thursday, Feb. 14th. Valentine bags will be decorated at school so you do not need to create a Valentine box at home. Happy Saturday!
I hope you all have an amazing relaxing weekend! We had a busy week this week! We started our new Benchmark Unit, Tales to Live By, in which we will be reading fables, myths, and folktales from around the world. In math we have still been focusing on subtraction with regrouping. We paused to do a short review on subtraction math facts using number lines and the "count back to subtract" strategy. We also reviewed fact families with the hopes of further solidifying those subtraction math facts. Keep working at home! We started our unit on opinion writing as well this week. Students wrote about their favorite season and gave three reasons for their opinion. These were fun to read! We will continue to expand upon this theme next week!
Next week is kindness week! Please see the schedule below for special events. Also please remember there is no school on Friday as it is a teacher training day.

We will be having a money war among all the grade levels. We are collecting money to donate to the “Kind Coins for Liberia”. Coins count for our class and dollar bills count against us (we still encourage students to send dollars to put in another grade level cluster’s bucket). We are trying to collect the most coins/dollars for our 1-2 cluster and win!
In addition, NJHS will be selling kindness grams on the playground before school. Each gram is .50 cents and all proceeds will go to the “Kind Coins for Liberia” fund.

Hello Everyone!
We have had an amazing full week of learning this week! We dove back in and finished our technology unit in our Benchmark language arts curriculum this week. We talked a lot about summarizing, compound words, and main idea. the magazines will come home today with a new optional homework calendar if you want to take a look at them. In math, we started subtraction with re-grouping. This is probably one of the most challenging 2nd grade math standards. We've been working with apples and cubes, really trying to solidify the concept of re-grouping in a concrete way. Later this week, we moved to working on problems on our personal white boards. We are going to continue practicing this into next week and please feel free to reinforce this skill at home! Also please practice math facts! Especially subtraction! The stronger and more fluent our students are with these basic facts, the easier the more difficult concepts become. Thank you so much for all your support at home! We couldn't do it without you! During our project group time, we've be talking about fact vs. opinion. The students had a blast using Kahoot and Flip Grip to ask and answer opinion questions, making sure to give a reason for our opinion. Ask them about it! Next week we will begin to explore opinion writing.
Art is in need of baby wipes. Any that you could donate would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Happy New Year!
I hope you all had a wonderful winter break and are ready to start the new year! Thank you to all of you who participate in our ILP conferences. It was great meeting with all of you and sharing all of the amazing growth that your young learning have been making. Some notes from conferences:
1: Remember to edit the weekly writing sample that will come home stapled to your student's Friday letter.
2: Graded math fact assessments will begin Friday January 18th.
This week we will gradually get back into the "swing of things" by reviewing our classroom procedures and completing some new year and STEM activities. We will also be experimenting with FlipGrid, which is a fun app that lets us record and share our projects that we've created in the classroom. Ask your student about it!
This week we will review and practice subtraction without regrouping in anticipation of introducing subtraction with regrouping in the upcoming weeks. This is a great time to start practicing those subtraction math facts!
I am looking forward to seeing everyone Thursday!

Hello Fabulous Families!
We had a wonderful first full week back, and are in full swing learning about point of view, addition with regrouping, and continuing with our writing skills. This coming week with will introduce the editing process. For the month of December we will be focusing on kindness in our classroom. The students will be provided with opportunities to do kind acts and share kind notes with others in the class and others around the school.
On Friday we had the opportunity to participate in another Build-and Write. This time we worked on the genre of a fable. Students had to build their setting and characters with Legos, and then write a story with a beginning, middle, and an end that included a lesson or a moral. Ask your student about theirs! They always have so much fun with this activity! On this note, if you have any spare Lego building blocks lying around the house, we could always add them to our collection. The students never seem to have enough ;-)
We could also use Band-Aid donations. We seem to go through those like crazy with all of the skinned knees and elbows we incur daily! Thank you!
We have a wonderful team of parents already working hard on planning an amazing winter party for our classroom! Be on the lookout for a supplies Sign-Up coming your way soon! Thank you for all you do to make our classroom a great experience for our students!
Have a great week!

Hello wonderful families!
We have had another amazing week here in room 104! We started our new Benchmark unit on How do Plants and Animals Get What They Need to Survive? We have been busy reading and annotating passages about different habitats and animals that live there.
Many students have brought their research materials. Next week we will be diving into our research and collecting data for projects for our summative. We are going to be animal experts!
On Wednesday we will be doing our pumpkin STEM activity in the afternoon. We will be making predictions, measuring, counting, and then following up with a writing activity. We are still in need of a few medium size pumpkins and volunteers if anyone is available to help us with the fun project.
Book Orders went home this week. These are a great way to stock up on some grade level reading materials and a very reasonable price!
Please submit your orders by next Friday November 2nd.

Happy Friday!
Another successful week is in the books! We finished up our 2nd unit in Benchmark Advance today, so you should find your student's workbook in their backpacks. Earlier this week, I sent home a homework calendar with extension activities that you can use with these workbooks. Feel free to use these as a homework option if you wish.
Today we read "The Little Old Lady Who Wasn't Afraid of Anything" and then used Legos to build our own "spooky story." Students were to design a setting, choose characters, and then write a story with a beginning, middle, and ending. Students had a blast building and writing! Ask them about their "spooky story!"
You should have also seen a yellow letter come home with information about or animal/habitat research and diorama project. Please remember to send all research information in a bag, labeled with your student's name by next Thursday October 25th. Please do not send diorama materials until November 7th, as we do not have room in the classrooms to store everyone's materials for any length of time. These projects will be displayed at our summative on November 15th.
The back of the yellow letter detailed information about our Halloween STEM activities! If you are available to volunteer or donate materials, please email me! Thank you!
I hope you all have an amazing weekend!

Wow! It's hard to believe we are already heading into the last week of Quarter 1! The ILP Conference Manager opens tomorrow morning, so be sure to sign up for a time that both you and your child can meet with me. We will be sharing data notebooks and discussing goals, so it is important that you can both be there. Also, I will not be able to re-schedule your conference if you are out of town, so please plan accordingly. Thank you!
This week we started our new unit on Characters Facing Problems. We have been reading, annotating, and comparing and contrasting fairy tales. Ask your student how many different versions of Cinderella there are! During math we have continued our unit on measurement, and this week we dove into writing a personal narrative based on a class experience.
If you are planning on your child attending out field trip to Charlotte's Web, please return your payment and permission slip by September 27th. Also we will be drawing names for our chaperones this week, and will notify you if your name was drawn. Thank you!

Happy Weekend!
We have finished off our unit on government! Your student should have brought home their government workbook yesterday. Take a moment to look through it with them and take a look at all of the hard work they put in over the past several weeks annotating, asking questions, looking for key details etc. To wrap up our unit, we also had an ASU police officer come in and answer any questions we may have about his job. Next week we will start a new unit Characters Facing Challenges.
We continued measurement in math. We have been talking about centimeters and meters and how to find the difference in length between two objects. We've been using Zearn in the classroom. Be sure to keep using Dreambox at home for extra individual practice.
Yesterday, we celebrated International Dot Day and Growth Mindset in class by reading The Dot. We talked about what it means to have a growth vs. a fixed mindset, especially when it comes to learning, and then we used a growth mindset to complete a STEM index card and dot sticker tower. Ask your student about the experience!
Permission slips for our first field trip came home yesterday! Be sure to check your child's backpack and sign and return these ASAP. Thank you!
September 7th, 2018
We have had a busy 4 day week continuing our unit on government. The students are continuing to practice asking questions before, during, and after reading, looking for the main idea of a text, and practicing open and closed syllable words.
We have also continued our math unit on measurement. This week we made our own centimeter rulers and measured all kinds of items we could find in our pencil box. Today we used our new measuring skills and practiced with the online math program Zearn.
We also worked together to make our own states and flags this week. The students had a blast being creative and coming up with their own unique land! On Thursday, we assembled these states into countries, which we will continue to work with next week.
Thank you for visiting our book fair and supporting our school! Have an amazing weekend!

Happy 3 Day Weekend!
I hope you are all having and amazing and safe Labor Day weekend!
We had an awesome week of learning last week. Students dove into our first language arts unit. We spend the week reading, analyzing and annotating various texts in their reading having to do with out unit one theme: government. Spelling words for week two will again be posted on this weebly site.
We took out project group time this week and spent it studying a non-fiction article about bats! We studied key vocabulary, compared and contrasted, and talked about facts vs. opinions. We finished up the week by creating a fun acrostic and bat craftivity!
Homework calendars and Dreambox login information came home in your student's folder last week. Weekly homework will start this week. Please record what you child does (no more than 30 minutes a night) in their homework notebook. Remember, reading and math facts are the priority! The homework calendar just provides options for enrichment and creativity. Homework notebooks should be returned on Friday for me to check. If a students does not turn in their homework notebook for the week they will loose Fun Friday time. Please encourage your student to also practice Dreambox at home. This is a math program that gears activities towards your student's individual level is great for independent enrichment! This can be recorded in their homework notebook as well!
On another note, our school book fair is here! Please feel free to stop by before or after school to do some shopping!

Week 4 is in the books! Next week we dive into Unit 1 of our Benchmark Advance entitled Government at Work. Along with this program, we will be starting weekly spelling tests. We will start each week with a pre-test on Monday, practice the words throughout the week, and then have our final test on Friday. We are also looking forward to starting reading groups next week.
This past week we read, discussed, and annotated the poem Who Has Seen the Wind by Christina Rosetti. Students did a great job of being active listeners, discussing the author's purpose, looking for short and long vowel sounds, and making inferences. Ask them what they visualized this week as we read this poem!
During math, we talked a lot about number bonds and making a 10 to add with the help of linking cubes and dominoes. We got to experiment with our new math technology program called Zearn this week too! Ask you student about it!
During project group, we read two non-fiction books about giraffes and then used graphic organizers to write our first informational writing piece. On Thursday we got a little crafty and finished the project off with a super fun giraffe directed draw and watercolor painting. These are displayed in our classroom and are amazing!
You should find a new Friday letter in your student's backpack. Please make sure to read, respond, and return these next week and I will add them to the file for the end of year book.
You hopefully also saw the note about the optional Story Stone project. If you and your student feel like getting crafty in the near future, we would love to start a collection in our classroom to use as writing inspiration!
I hope you all have an amazingly relaxing weekend!

Happy Friday Everyone!
We have successfully made it through week 3, and have gotten into a great routine! We are growing and learning together as a classroom community every day and it is amazing to see!
Our new playground opened this morning (yay!), so from now on, unless we have a rainy day schedule, the students will be heading to the playground in the mornings before school. We got a little time yesterday to head out as a class, talk about the playground rules, and test it out before the grand opening this morning!
This week we talked a lot about non-fiction writing and text elements by reading our big book Hurricanes. Ask your students what they learned about hurricanes and what some of the elements of non-fiction text that we discussed are! We also dove into our 2nd grade math this week and discussed number bonds up to 10.
Book orders were sent home this week. These are a great, inexpensive way to stock up your at-home libraries! If you would like to order something, please submit your online order, using the class code attached, no later than next Friday August 24th.
We will be starting our class "Owl About Me" posters (aka student of the week) this Friday. If your child is student of the week, the poster will be sent home on Friday. Please fill it out and send it back the following Monday so we can display it for the week! Your student will get to then present their poster at our class meeting the following Friday.
Finally, we started out Friday letters this morning. Each Friday, your student will be writing a family member a letter about their week. We ask that you the write back to your student on the backside of the letter and return it to school on Monday. We will be collecting these letters to create a priceless book for you to keep at the end of the year. This is also a great way to see your child's writing develop over the course of the year!
I hope you all have an amazing weekend!

It's the weekend! Time to kick back and relax after another amazing week in 2nd Grade! Your students are simply amazing and I really appreciate the positive attitudes and hard work that each and every one of them is putting in every day! We are really coming together as a classroom community and it's amazing to watch!
We continued this week reviewing our classroom procedures, being attentive listeners, and making good choices. We read, discussed and annotated the poem "Foreign Lands" by Robert Louis Stevenson. Ask your student what he or she learned about poems this week! We also reviewed phonics rules and continued to practice our Daily 5 rotations.
Our picture day is Wednesday, August 22nd. Please have your child wear their uniform. Your child will received an envelope for picture money on Thursday. Look for it in your child’s homework folder. If you are ordering pictures, please return the envelope to school on or before Tuesday, August 21st.

Happy Sunday everyone! I hope you are all enjoying a restful weekend after a successful first week of school! I have thoroughly enjoyed starting to get to know each and every one of your young learners and am looking forward to an amazing year!
This past week we started out with a lot of "getting to know you" type activities as well as getting to know our classroom procedures and community. A lot of students have had the opportunity to share their book boxes already, and we will finish up with those this week. We have loved seeing everyone's creativity and personality shine through on these!
We also talked a lot about what an active listener looks like, reviewed some phonics rules, read a lot of fun stories and practiced having conversations about these stories, practiced picking "just right" books for our book boxes, solved some math problems and so much more. Ask your students about the big book Postcard Clues and the postcards that Sarah wrote to Sam! Where are some of the places that Sarah visited?

Kids Heart Challenge
This week your child received their Kids Heart Challenge flyer (Formerly known as Jump Rope for Heart). Here’s a message from Coach Fahey:
We have officially kicked off our Kids Heart Challenge program and our school's big event is right around the corner! Last year, we jumped rope for heart and this year we’re kicking off the all-new Kids Heart Challenge!
If your child wants to participate in the Valentine exchange, please have your child make one Valentine for each student in our class. A class list will be sent home soon. We have 25 students in our class. Small items or candy may be attached to the Valentines.

Hello!
We had an amazing week of learning in room 104! We celebrated kindness week with kindness attacks, spirit dress days, and money wars. The students had a lot of fun and learned a lot about being kind! We continued our Benchmark Unit, Tales to Live By, in which we are studying pourquoi tales, fables, and myths from around the world.
In math, we wrapped up subtraction with regrouping! Your students have done an amazing job! Keep practicing those math facts at home for fluency! Next week we will be focusing on word problems and checking our work using addition.

Kindness Week

Thank you!

We are looking forward to seeing you this Tuesday, August 7th at 5:30 for our curriculum night!

Hello everyone!
Welcome to our class updates page! Here you will find weekly updates about what's going on inside our classroom as well as important information including upcoming events and announcements. It was a pleasure meeting meeting both parents and students alike at our Meet the Teacher event last Thursday, and I am super excited to start our year off this Monday July 30th. Below are a few details to remember as we start:
First Day: Parents are welcome to park and walk their students to the playground through the south gate. The gate will open at 7:45. When the whistle blows at 8:10, students will then line line up with the class and wave good-bye to mom and dad. Starting the second day of school, please follow normal drive line drop off procedures. Thank you!
Take Home Folder: Students will be bringing home a take-home folder daily that will contain information regarding behavior, daily handouts, graded work, etc. This folder will go back and forth to school every day. Please make sure to check this folder and initial the behavior chart every night. Thank you!
Weebly Page: If you are here, then you know :-) Be sure to check this page weekly for important announcements and class updates!
Dress Code: Please review the dress code policies in the student handbook. We have been asked to strictly enforce these policies this year.
Snack: Please be sure to provide a healthy snack for your child daily. We are asking for the safety of all students that all snack be nut free. Also, please be sure that your student is aware of which item in their lunchbox should be eaten for snack.
Water Bottle: Please send a water bottle labeled with your child's name daily.
Classroom Supplies: Thank you all for all of your generous donations of classroom supplies!
Primary email: Be sure to email me ASAP with your primary email address that you would like me to use for communication this year. Thank you!
Book Boxes: Please be sure to decorate and reinforce your child's book box with lots of duct tape! Fee free to personalize and be creative as we will share these as a getting to know you activity the first week of school!
Thank you all for everything that you do! I am looking forward to an amazing year with your awesome students!
